Many players out there don’t quite understand how slots actually work and they tend to blame their losses and even some of their winnings, on myths or false ideas. These ideas can only add to your frustration and prevent you from becoming the good online slot player that you want to be. Some of the most common misconceptions about free online slots are:

1.	Someone has hit a jackpot on your online slot machine right after you left. You think that that jackpot was yours and that only if you continued playing for a little while you would’ve won it. As a matter of fact, this is not the case. All online slot machines have a chip inserted into them called the Random Number Generator. The RNG works to make all play fair and every time a player hits the spin button, the RNG will pick a combination of numbers to the closest microsecond. The RNG will cycle through thousands of new combinations in a matter of seconds, hence making it very unlikely for you to have pressed the spin button at that exact moment when the winning jackpot combination was created.

2.	A slot machine that has not hit in a long time is due to pay out. This statement is false since there is no possible way to determine when a machine is going to pay out. Once again, the RNG will determine the odds of hitting a jackpot or a paying winning combination and new spins do not have a memory as of what happened during previous spins.

3.	Betting with more than one coin will increase your odds of winning. When a player bets with more than one coin on his spin, they will definitely add to their winning amount but not to their chances of hitting a winning combination. The Random Number Generator does not know how many coins were inserted and leaves the winning patterns to pure chance. Betting three coins on a spin will not guarantee that you can hit that special jackpot.

The science behind an online slot machine is quite simple, even for the lay-person to understand. Well, perhaps programming, designing and uploading one from scratch is no easy task, but the general principles of slots games are easily understood. The game can be thought as having three main components. The programming architecture, the visual design and the payout rates. The first part involves a skilled technician that can program the code of the game. What is used here is a Random Number Generator, a sort of algorithm that scrambles numbers and results in a completely random way. This ensures that the game will pay fairly in an unpredictable way. The second aspect of slot game producing is the design. For this part a team creating a new slot machine will hire a talented graphic designer to create the reels, icons and buttons. Then the programmer will take those images and load them up on his coded game. Everything is all most done, but then the programmer or casino operator will decide how “loose” the game should be.

By “loose” we mean how often and how highly it will pay, but don’t imagine they will program the machine to pay once every 10 spins or $10 in winnings after $100 bets. No, the games will receive a percentage that is often referred to as “pay out” or “pay-back” rate. This percentage will be inserted into the Random Number Generator (RNG) and the game’s looseness will be based on that. The percentage is surprisingly high when most people hear about it. It is around 95%. That means a casino is only taking around 5% of all bets, all the rest are being paid out. However, since the game is using a RNG to produce the results, the winnings and losses are very unpredictable on the short term. An online slot can pay after a few spins over 200% or I can pay under 40%. Over the long run, after hundreds of players spinning the reels for thousands of times, some of them winning, some of them losing, the machine will average out and return to its programmed pay-back rate.

Understanding this makes players feel more comfortable when betting on online slots.
